In the Hunziker Areal real laboratory, behavioral changes were to be initiated that reduce resource consumption. In addition to pure behavioural changes, new supply systems were also tested, all with the aim of a high quality of life with a low ecological footprint (e.g. a meat subscription with reduced quantities, a self-service depot with sustainable food, etc.).
The Hunziker Areal in Zurich is a city district, which has adopted the 2000-watt society objectives to consume less than 1 ton of CO2 per person per year. It is operated by the housing cooperative external page"mehr als wohnen"call_made, which was founded by bringing together over thirty Zurich-based housing cooperatives. “Mehr als Wohnen” is understood as a platform for learning and innovation that wants to try out new forms of urban living. The aim is to be inclusive and inhabitants reflect the Zurich demographics in terms of age, income and background.
Such behavioural changes were initiated in the Hunziker Areal Reallabor. To ensure that the corresponding measures meet with broad acceptance and continue to have an effect after the end of the project, they were developed together with interested residents and the administration.
As part of the project, two transdisciplinary case studies were carried out for ETH master's students. In the spring semester of 2017, students dedicated themselves to the topic of sufficiency in the area of food, and in the spring semester of 2019, students worked on the topic of mobility.
The Reallabor Hunziker Areal was run in cooperation with the ZHAW and "mehr als wohnen" and was financially supported by the external pageMercator Schweiz Foundationcall_made.

Testimonials
"I particularly liked the connection between social relevance and scientific work. It was also very refreshing to be able to use one's creativity once again." (Student, Case study 2017)
"We never felt like an object of research, we always had the feeling that the students were doing something for us." (Resident on the Hunziker Areal)
