Co-creating mobility hubs

Innovative and integrated area developments and mobility solutions significantly contribute to the careful use of scarce surface resources while creating livable urban spaces for the population. Mobility hubs, where various transportation options converge, play a crucial role in future regional, urban, and district developments since they enhance site attractiveness, competitiveness, sustainability, and quality of life.

The development of mobility hubs involves many actors and stakeholders. They possess varying interests, responsibilities, and planning cultures. Realizing the expected economic and societal benefits requires careful guidance and coordination. The lack of accessible and straightforward methods for unifying various perspectives is challenging in this context. Such practices would facilitate collaborative transformations and mitigate the risks of conflicts and opposition to new projects.

About the joint ETHZ-EPFL-SBB project Co-Creating Mobility Hubs

The research project produced methods for the collaborative and transdisciplinary development (co-creation) of mobility hubs. It analyzed tasks, competencies, and processes based on three case studies (Bern Wankdorf, Ostermundigen, and Nyon). The project aimed to deepen the understanding of mobility hubs within Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and with societal stakeholders and identify the core challenges to effective collaboration between actors.

This research project was designed as a transdisciplinary initiative. The research was planned and implemented in close collaboration with SBB. A continuous process of learning and reflection was organized among the TdLab, the research group Spatial Development and Urban Policy (SPUR), the Institute of Science, Technology and Policy (ISTP) from ETH Zurich, the Research Habitat Center (HRC) from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), and SBB. This process allowed all project participants to learn and thus helps in building capacity to co-create mobility hubs in Switzerland.

The methods from the project were incorporated into the First Volume of the Planning Aid for Mobility Hubs, which the external page Swiss Association of Public Transport (VöV) published online in German, French and Italian in August 2023.
