Nowcasting, forecasting, upscaling – Novel avenues for forest vitality monitoring and anticipating forest dynamics (UPSCALE)

The UPSCALE project aims to develop innovative tools for assessing the health of Switzerland's forests. Its goal is to create a web-based platform that provides real-time information to project practitioners, enabling more effective forest management. Specifically, the project focuses on obtaining integrated early warning signals for detecting health decline and mortality in trees and forests across spatial scales.

In this context, the primary objective is to engage with various stakeholders, including silviculturists, policymakers, forest practitioners, ecologists, and the broader public, to facilitate a collaborative knowledge exchange. Through interviews and consultations, the project seeks to co-create a prototype for the web application, ensuring it meets the specific needs of these communities. Central to the project’s mission is promoting science democratization, and advocating for inclusive participation in the development process. By prioritizing accessibility and relevance to the real-world challenges faced by those closely connected to forest environments, the project aims to support communities and practitioners in effectively addressing future ecological concerns.

Upscale is an SNSF-Sinergia funded project (2024–2028). Further informations can be found at the following links:
